Begynn å jogge for å komme i form.

This commitment as well as loyalty is something I’ve come to truly admire as well as appreciate about dogs.

You’ll discover when you exercise with dogs, you’re not only linking with them on a canine level, however you’re assisting to satisfy a extremely primal requirement for them. They’ll like you for it, as well as you’ll soon acknowledge that the delight you’re providing them is something that will come best back to you.

Happy 9. Adoptaversary Ace!

Training an anxious dog too quickly

My foster dog Cosmo is teaching me to rely mostly on positive reinforcement training, to be patient and relaxed and to be creative in finding ways to boost his confidence.

He reminds me to simplify everything I ask of him.

Instead of expecting Cosmo to remain in a 20-minute stay, yield to me in doorways and never pull on the leash, I need to focus on one of these concepts at a time and break them down into smaller steps. That way Cosmo can be successful and encouraged to learn more.

Cosmo is a very sweet, friendly guy. He wants to make me happy. He wants to make everyone happy. He just needs to work at his own pace. Jeg kan relatere!

Sometimes my expectations are way too high for him. That’s important to point out, because it’s a mistake most dog owners make. Dogs are capable of learning quite a bit, but they need clear, simple directions with sometimes 100s of repetitions.

For dogs that haven’t experienced much in their lives, even the tiniest challenges can be extremely difficult.

Cosmo is a good example of a dog who has very little tolerance for stress. He gets frustrated very easily, especially when asked to do something new. I can also tell he experiences some amount of fear in new situations or if I express any frustration myself.

I don’t know why Cosmo has a low stress tolerance. It could be his personality. It could be genetics. but it’s also painfully obvious that he’s had very little training and socialization. I don’t think he’s been expected to do much for the last nine years or so.

Here’s an example:

Cosmo knows how to step over his leash if it gets caught under his armpit. but if it gets tangled further, he goes into a panic – rolling and biting and making the situation worse. A dog with a higher tolerance for stress would remain collected and either figure out how to get the leash untangled or wait for help. Ingen stor sak.

If I ask Cosmo to do something new, it’s typical for him to shut down. He avoids eye contact. His ears go back. He turns away. He shakes. He tries to retreat to his kennel or a corner of the house away from me. He licks his lips. If I push him too far or try to use force, he will snap.

Cosmo is very good at clearly expressing his stress levels. It’s my job to pay attention and to slowly build his confidence without pushing him too far.

Just the other day, I asked Cosmo to lie down on a towel for a treat. You would think I had asked him to jump off a cliff! He became terrified, showed signs of shutting down and was not going to put one toe on that towel!

Rather than give up, I decided to use this opportunity to build Cosmo’s confidence.

So I got out the treats and rewarded him for sitting next to the towel.

Wow! What a good boy!

Then, he got a treat for putting one paw on the towel. Next, I rewarded him for standing on the towel. Then, for lying down on the towel.

Puh!

The whole process took at least 10 minutes.

Cosmo was mentally exhausted after that and needed a long nap to recover. I probably pushed him too far, actually.

I realize most dogs are not going to experience stress over something such as a towel or a piece of trash blowing in the wind. but it’s still important to break concepts into small steps for all dogs.

Now that I’ve lived with Cosmo for a few months, I can see why people with reactive/aggressive or fearful dogs find it easier to just keep the dogs away from other dogs or away from new people.

I also realize some dogs are so dangerous they truly can’t leave their homes. I probably would not be able to work with a dog like that. I need to be able to get out of the house and take my dog for walks and to take him anywhere dogs are allowed.

Although Cosmo is 9 years old, I know he will be able to slowly stretch his limits and feel more comfortable in new situations. He loves to go to adoption events and training classes, and he loves to go on walks, so that’s great!

Break dog training into small steps

Cosmo and I got to help out with a beginner’s obedience class. Cosmo was the demo dog, showing off his mad “skills” such as sitting and staying. He’s very good at this because he is treat motivated. It’s easy to guide him, and he loves the class environment.

Most of the dog handlers in these classes know how to teach sit and stay (some don’t), but everyone is there as a reminder to work in small steps with our dogs.

Even the concept of “stay” is complex, but beginning dog trainers move way too quickly all the time.

I teach “stay” by giving the dog lots of treats for not moving even when I’m standing right next to him.

Once he has that down, I pivot so I’m facing the dog but still right next to him. The treats keep coming as long as the dog stays.

I use a verbal release word – ok– to signal to the dog he can move again. but the real rewards come only when the dog is actually staying, not after he is released.

A dog cannot possibly grasp the concept of “stay” right off the bat, even if I take just one step away. but dog owners try to take several steps away all the time, before the dog understands the “stay” concept. This is frustrating to both the human and the dog and often results in the human giving up for good.

My dog Ace will pretty much stay no matter what. I don’t know how people live with dogs who won’t stay for more than 30 seconds. It would drive me crazy.

Ace didn’t even know what “sit” meant when I got him. I remember the difficulties I had communicating with him on that first day. I had to hold onto his collar if I didn’t want him to move. This was quite the challenge with a 65-pound, excitable dog. and paws are always muddy during Minnesota springs.

After I adopted Ace, we would go on an hour-long walk every single morning. We’d stop in the church parking lot by my old apartment and practice sit-stay over and over again. Hver. Enkelt. Dag.

First he learned to stay while I turned and faced him toe-to-toe.

Next I’d tell him to stay while I took a step away or a step in any direction. once he understood that, I’d go halfway to the end of the leash. maybe the next day I’d try walking in a circle around my dog (always a tough one!), and so on.

If we practiced in a new area, I’d start all over from square one or from wherever my dog could be successful.

When I taught him “down” and “stay,” we started over again.

We went through lots of jerky treats and 100s of little training sessions.

Cosmo will be able to sit and stay just as reliably as Ace. it all depends on how much time I put into his training. and because of his low tolerance for stress, I have to make sure to work very slowly and set him up for lots of success.

Cosmo wants to run and hide if he knows he’s done something “wrong.” This is teaching me to truly ignore his mistakes and praise him when he does something right. It’s harder than it sounds! like Cosmo, I can get easily frustrated, so he and I are working together on our stress tolerances!

Set specific criteria for each training session

It helps me to ask myself what I want to work on during each particular training session with my dog. Otherwise, I get overwhelmed because I will be thinking too broadly.

Not specific: I am going to teach my dog to heel.

Specific: I am going to stop moving forward every time my dog pulls. “Pulling” means the leash is tight or the dog’s shoulder is in front of my hip. The dog will get a treat every time he looks at me. If my dog pulls, I will not get frustrated. Instead, I will switch directions often, walk in a zig-zag and walk at different speeds so my dog never knows what I’ll be up to. I will keep the walk fun and interesting and reward my dog with food when he’s doing what I want.

Not specific: I am going to teach my dog to come when I call him.

Specific: I am going to grab some chicken and run away from my dog in the backyard yelling “Cosmo, come!” in a firm but friendly voice. My dog will get the chicken when he sits directly in front of me. I will use the chicken to guide him. He will have a long lead on so I can catch him and re-direct his attention if needed. I will remain happy and fun even if my dog is having a hard time focusing.

First-time dog owners or dog owners who’ve just gotten a new dog (like me and my foster dog) don’t always have a clear understanding of what it means to really break dog training down into small steps. It isn’t natural to us. We tend to look at the big picture and expect results right away.

But you typically can’t teach a dog to roll over right away, for example. You have to first teach the dog to lie on his side and then to start shifting in one direction and then to roll completely over.

You can’t teach a dog to stay on his dog bed while you eat dinner unless you’ve already taught him the concept of stay. then you have to practice moving away from the dog and slowly increasing the time he stays. then you can add mild distractions like a steak dinner ?

What are your suggestions for training an anxious or fearful dog?

As for Cosmo and I, by no means do I have him figured out. He has a lot more to teach me – mostly about patience and remaining positive.

For those of you who have worked with dogs with any kind of fear or anxiety issues, I would love to hear your suggestions for how I can build Cosmo’s confidence. I have him signed up for another obedience class since it’s something we both enjoy.

Cosmo is up for adoption with 4 Luv of dog Rescue in Fargo. read more about him in my post American Eskimo dog for adoption in Fargo. If you would like more info om cosmo, send en e -post til lindsay@thatmutt.com.

Darwin’s Duck Necks Review

Darwin’s free-range duck necks – what I think

I feed my dog Remy a raw diet, but even if you don’t feed your dog raw food, he can still enjoy the benefits of an occasional raw treat.

Duck necks are considered “raw meaty bones.” Raw poultry bones such as chicken, turkey and duck bones are soft and pliable, making them easy for dogs to digest.

Cooked bones are hard and sharp, so you only want to give your dog raw bones.

I recommend the duck necks from Darwin’s because raw duck necks are a convenient and safe way to introduce “raw meaty bones” to your dog’s diet. They’re a good option for dogs and puppies of all sizes.

There’s also something I enjoy about enjoying my dog crunching on a raw meaty bone! eating raw food is natural for dogs, and the duck necks from Darwin’s make my weimaraner so happy!

Don’t be surprised by how quickly your dog might chew up and eat a duck neck! Remy loves them, and he eats his in just a few minutes.

I know it’s hard for some dog owners to get used to the idea of feeding their dogs raw bones because I used to worry about this too. but don’t worry, raw duck necks are a very safe option for your dog.

If you’d like more information on feeding your dog raw bones, That Mutt has several articles you can read:

The benefits of raw poultry necks for dogs

Pros of Darwin’s free-range raw duck necks – Are duck necks good for dogs?

Ja! here are some of benefits of raw duck necks for dogs:

Duck necks are rich in omega-3 fats

They are a source of vitamin B3

They promote a healthy gut

Raw bones clean a dog’s teeth

Duck necks work a dog’s jaw

They contain glucosamine & chondroitin for healthy joints

Poultry bones are soft and pliable and can be fully digested

Darwin’s duck necks are from free-range ducks

They come in sealed, 2-pound packages (about 8 necks)

Ulemper:

There really aren’t any cons to the raw duck necks except a few common sense things to keep in mind when feeding any type of raw food or any type of bone or chew.

You want to introduce new treats slowly to your dog’s diet to avoid an upset tummy, especially if your dog is not used to raw food.

Any type of bone, chew or rawhide for dogs has a slight choking risk, so make sure to supervise your dog.

All raw meaty bones are a bit “gross” and messy so you may want to feed them outside, on a towel or in your dog’s crate.

The duck necks may also not be for you if they’re out of your budget. However, they still might make a great treat for your dog every now and then! I hope you’ll enter our giveaway by leaving a comment at the end of this article!

How to feed a dog a raw duck neck

There is a small choking risk when you give your dog any type of chew, bone, rawhide or toy. With duck necks, this risk is slightly higher for larger breeds since big dogs are more likely to try to swallow a duck neck whole.

Safety tips when feeding your dog raw duck necks:

1. try holding the duck neck while your dog chews it (if he is not possessive).

This will help him learn to slowly crunch up the bone a bit before swallowing.

Don’t be alarmed if your dog does swallow large chunks of the duck neck. As long as it “fits,” your dog will be just fine. For example, Remy will crunch upEt helt kyllinglår bare to eller tre ganger før du svelger, og så “nedover det går!” Ingen stor sak.

Rå andhals for katter

Gi meg beskjed i kommentarene!

Why Do Dogs Lean On You?

Do dogs lean on us out of dominance?

I saw a comment thread on reddit where everyone was saying how cute it is when their dogs lean on them for affection. most people said they like when their dogs lean on them, and they don’t seem to think anything of it, good or bad.

Then there were a few people who jumped in preaching Cesar-Millan talk, saying that a dog that leans on you is trying to assert his dominance. and of course this created all kinds of drama as people became overly emotional and defensive about “dominance theory.”

Here’s the thing: sometimes dogs do use their bodies to claim space or to get to an object first or to simply be in the lead. call it dominance. call it cute. call it whatever you want. It’s what dogs do.

But not a single person (except yours truly!) brought up the fact that many dogs will lean on their owners for security. They will lean on their owners because they are shy, fearful or insecure in that moment. They are not trying to dominate their owners. They are trying to feel safe.

Nine times out of 10, when dogs lean on us they really are just seeking attention. They like to be close to people. and yes, sometimes it’s rude.

Why dogs lean on us

My dogs Ace will come up and slam his side into my legs, wiggling his body into a U shape and whipping his tail every which way.

I don’t see this as dominance (although he does want my attention) or insecurity (although he does feel safer with me around). He’s just trying to connect with his best friend! og gjett hva? Det fungerer!

I always bend down and give him a good butt scratch. “Good boy, Ace!”

But there are dog owners who don’t read into anything their dogs are telling them. everything the dog does is cute or funny to them, even when the dog is trying to communicate something. To them, a dog that leans couldn’t possibly be trying to say anything other than “I love you.”

And then there are dog owners who assume every action from a dog always means the same thing. Growling always represents dominance, for example. Or a wagging tail always represents happiness. Or leaning always represents friendship. Hmm …

In order to understand our dogs, we need to pay more attention to what they are trying to communicate during each specific situation.

Dogs can certainly block us with their bodies in order to gain access to what they want, but they will also lean on us in order to feel safe.

Here are some examples of when an insecure dog might lean on his owner:

1. shy dogs will typically lean on their owners in order to feel safe

My former foster dog Cosmo was a leaner.

He would lean on me when someone came to the door or when we attended an adoption event. This wasn’t because he was trying to dominate me. He was leaning on me in order to feel more secure.

Poor Cosmo was always stressed at adoption events. His ears would be back. He would avoid direct eye contact with people. He would pant with an open mouth. usually one front paw would be raised and tucked up into his chest. sometimes he trembled. sometimes he even growled at people.

No wonder no one was very interested in him during these events!

I made sure not to give Cosmo affection when he leaned on me for security. telling him “It’s OK. Det er greit. good boy,” would only teach him to continue looking to me for security. In order to help him grow as an individual and build his confidence, I had to teach him not to depend on me so much.

So I would block Cosmo with my hip or my elbow (I was usually sitting on the floor with him). Or I would simply move away or up into a chair. He would usually shift back in order to lean on me again, and I would move away again as well. When he was relaxed and lying next to me without touching, I would pet him calmly.

Jeg vet jeg vet. some of you are thinking, “But affection does not reinforce a dog’s fears.” Det er sant. and I’m not saying you should correct a fearful dog. just look for ways to block some habits in order to slowly help the dog move on and grow.

See my post: Does affection reward a fearful dog?

Treats and favorite toys can also be very useful to help distract an insecure dog from everything going on. You can use treats to get him to think about something else like sit or stay and build his confidence that way. sometimes I would make Cosmo lie down and stay a foot away. then he would get the treat as a reward for maintaining distance. “Wow, what a good boy! So brave!”

2. Some dogs climb into their owners’ laps in order to feel more secure

Some little dogs will climb into their owners’ laps in order to feel more secure. big dogs try this as well, but it’s usually the smaller dogs that tremble in their owners’ arms because they fear something in the environment.Instead, the owner should place the dog on the ground and slowly help him understand that nothing bad happens in new situations. The owner should ignore the dog or move away when he frantically paws at her legs to get back up. She should give him a treat or pick him up only when he is calm or if the situation is truly risky for the little guy.

And of course, it’s important not to completely overwhelm the dog. If he’s fearful of new people and dogs it would be unfair to set him on the ground in the middle of a PetSmart or a street fair. but the owner should seek out less “scary” situations first and slowly challenge the dog more and more from there.

Some dogs will even become possessive of their owners, growling and biting from their owners’ arms if anyone gets too close. Of course they are going to be possessive. They don’t want to be removed from their “power source.”

But even these dogs are not barking out of dominance. They are barking up a storm because they are insecure. They are acting defensively.

So how can an owner fix this problem?

The same way as above. seek out situations that are not too overwhelming, and keep the dog on the ground. carrying him around will not help him build confidence.

Most little guys will right away try to jump back into their owners’ arms – their place of empowerment.

The owner should not allow this, not unless the dog is truly in danger.

If the dog tries to jump back into his owner’s lap, she should block him with her arm. If he makes it into her lap, she should stand and push him off or set him on the ground. If he starts growling and barking at people from her feet, she should put his leash on him and tether him away from her. She should reward him when he’s calm and not barking or crying.

The goal is to help the dog grow as an individual by weaning him away from his dependence on his owner.

See my post: how to stop my dog from guarding me.

3. Some dogs will hide between their owners’ legs at the dog park

When dogs hide between their owners’ legs at the dog park, many owners respond by petting the dog or talking to the dog.

Instead, it’s best to just step away. Fortsett. Don’t allow the dog to hide behind you or under you. help the dog build his confidence by decreasing his dependence on you.

If the dog seems overly shy or fearful, just walk away from the other dogs, re-group and return again after a few seconds. You don’t want to overwhelm your dog too much by forcing him to interact right off the bat. check out the dog park during quieter hours and don’t plan on staying for long. If he plays for a few seconds and then seems overwhelmed, just quit while you are ahead. At least he played for a few seconds. That is a success.

Some dogs appreciate socializing in smaller groups just like some people like to socialize in smaller groups. Some dogs and some people get tired of socializing sooner than others. Heck, I’m one of the most introverted people I know! I can certainly relate to all those introverted dogs out there.

What have you noticed about your dog when he leans on you?

Is he usually seeking attention? Makt? Sikkerhet? probably all of the above, depending on the situation. let us know in the comments!
