Is Your dog Smarter Than a Puppy Kindergartner?

Does your dog know more than a 3-month old puppy kindergartner?

Of course she does, but I thought it would be fun to share what my puppy Remy is working on in Week 1 of puppy classes.

I know some of you also have new dogs or puppies and whether or not you take your pup to training classes (I recommend it!), these are some things you can work on at home with a dog of any age.

Puppy classes Week 1

Here are four things we’re working on this week.

1. “Watch Me.”

This simply means to make eye contact. A dog looking at you can pay attention.

I shortened the command to “watch.” So it’s, “Remy, watch.” You hold a treat right up to your face and the moment your pup makes eye contact, you give the treat. practice 10 times in a row each day. very simple and works well.

“Remy, watch.” Behandle. “Remy, watch.” Behandle.

Do your dogs know this one?

2. Coming when called – back to basics.

Anyone have a dog who ignores you when you call him?

Going back to the basics is a good idea for reinforcing “come!” because it’s probably the most important command to teach a dog.

With the puppies, we held a treat right up to their noses, ran backwards and THEN called them once they were already driven to follow us.

Så det er:

get their attention
løp tilbake
call the puppy
belønning!

Come = fun & treats!

Other tip: Play “puppy in the middle” calling the puppy back and forth between two people.

3. A new situation each week.

For our puppy homework, our class is encouraged to have our puppies walk on a new surface every week. This could be things like sand, snow, pavement, rocks, shiny floors, concrete, leaves, whatever.

Sometimes new surfaces can seem scary or at least surprising for puppies so it’s good to expose them early on. See Puppy In Training’s post on this here.

For those of you with older dogs, it’s still a good challenge to try to introduce them to something different or new each week in general. This is fun for the dogs but also continues their ongoing socialization and experiences.

For example, visiting different dog friendly stores or cafes, walking in a different neighborhood or standing on a random “obstacle” like a picnic table during a walk. Remy walked on a new walking path last week (pictured above).

4. selecting a consistent release word.

A release word is the word that signals to your dog the training exercise is over. So if he’s sitting, he should sit until you say “OK!” or “Free!” or whatever word you choose.

I have always used “OK!” with my older dog Ace. Some advise against ok because it’s used so often in normal conversations and could potentially confuse the dog. This has never been a problem for me and I’ve chosen “OK” as Remy’s release word too.

You may or may not want to use the same release word for multiple dogs. It’s not a problem for my two, with Ace being so much older. Update: I ended up changing Remy’s release word to “break!” because “OK” is too common of a word in conversation and he was taking advantage of that! Ha ha.

The other basics we worked on this week were saying our puppy’s names for treats and luring them into a sit, but I figure most of your dogs have that down!

OK, so how is your dog doing on the above?

Which one could she use some work on? Remy needs lots of work on “come!”

Benefits of getting A Puppy From A Breeder

I’ve learned there are so numerous benefits of getting a puppy from a breeder.

We got our puppy Remy from a breeder, and it was such a positive experience.

OK, she did have a lengthy application form and a comprehensive contract for me to sign (yikes!) but that is to be expected.

This is not to say that going to a breeder is a better option than getting a puppy through a shelter or rescue. Det er ikke. There are benefits to both.

Benefits of getting a puppy from a breeder

1. Our puppy will not be neutered at 8 weeks old (creepy).

I plan to have our puppy neutered but not until he’s around 12 months old. We’ve discussed this with the breeder, and our vet also recommends waiting until the pup is at least 12 months old.

If you get a puppy from many shelters or rescue groups, the puppy will be spayed or neutered prior to adoption. It’s common practice for rescues to spay/neuter puppies as young as 8 weeks old.

Most people don’t seem to mind this, and it’s good because then you don’t have to worry about the expense and hassle of spaying/neutering down the road. This is also for the overall greater good of dogs. Rescues are certainly wishing to decrease the number of unwanted dogs by spaying & neutering puppies as early as possible.

However, I do not believe it is healthy for a puppy to be spayed or neutered at such a young age. You can read about that here. A dog’s balls are there for numerous reasons. recreating is just one. same goes for a female’s ovaries.

See my post: Is spaying and neutering the healthiest choice for my dog?

2. There was no “home visit” or reference check.

And young boy was that nice!

I did apply through several rescue groups and all but one rejected me for various reasons. Those reasons included not having a fenced yard, not giving out my landlord’s phone number for a reference and not vaccinating my senior, indoor cats for rabies. So I never even got to the “home visit” stage.

With our breeder, I did have to go through an comprehensive application process, show that I am a “true runner” and of course pay a deposit and wait several months on a waiting list. but no one inspected my home (such an invasion of privacy!) and no one called my vet or landlord.

3. We have time to plan for our puppy.

Going with a breeder has taken away the tension of rapidly choosing “the right” rescue dog.

One of the challenges with adoption is you really have to make a decision about the canine within a few days or even that day or someone else will adopt her. At least that is the case in San Diego. There is a HIGH demand for rescued dogs, especially puppies. The puppies are scooped up instantly and there are waiting lists.

Some people don’t mind making fast decisions about adoption. They “just know” the one and it works out great. That kind of fast decision making about a canine is incredibly stressful for me. I spend a lot of time deciding on the best dog, even when I’m just fostering.

4. I know I’m getting an athletic dog.

One of the benefits of getting a puppy through a breeder is I know our weimaraner will be capable of distance running, hiking and agility. There are no guarantees, but I know this with as much certainty as possible.

Yes, there are tons of rescue and shelter dogs that could make good running buddies and shelters like to market them as such. BUT, I’ve been running with dogs for 8 years as my job and I can tell you it’s actually hard to find a canine capable of distance running. As in, a canine who’s able to maintain my pace for much more than 10 minutes – and I’m slow as far as “runners” go!

I run at about a 10-minute per mile pace, and many dogs start to slow down after the first mile even if they’re in good shape. Most dogs just not built for long-distance running. walking or a slow jog is better for them.

Curious which breeds make the best distance runners in my experience? Pointing-type breeds! Dogs such as English pointers, vizslas, weims and pudelpointers. They can typically maintain my slow pace for over an hour and then sprint around the yard afterwards!

5. I’ve removed my emotional need to “rescue.”

I have this deep need to “rescue” dogs and cats in need. This is a fantastic thing, but I am also aware that this is also about me and not just about the animals. Fostering is a way for me to have a purpose and to feel good about myself, and I will certainly be fostering and adopting in the future.

However, there is something to be said about a puppy that will be loved every single day of his life. The fact that we are not “rescuing” him practically gives me a sense of relief. It allows me to just let him be who he is.

Cancer Trumped Raw pet dog Food

cancer as well as raw pet dog food

Today I’m sharing some poor news with you guys. Unfortunately, it appears like the nasty C has discovered its method back into our lives in type of a mast cell tumor on my pet dog Missy’s throat.

For those of you who don’t understand – my Boxer mix Missy was very first diagnosed with cancer in late 2014, at only 3 years of youth. Back then, she had a similar tumor eliminated as well as underwent 4 rounds of preventative chemotherapy treatment, for the grand overall of $7,689.20.

Our medical health problem insurance coverage with family pets finest ended up covering $6,177.18. As the monthly insurance coverage rate has considering that then climbed from $76 to $185, I just just recently scratched the health problem security from our insurance coverage plan (go figure) as well as only kept mishap coverage, which is an inexpensive $20 per month.

How I discovered out about my dog’s cancer

A few days ago, I took Missy to our routine vet for an examination to have 2 lumps inspected out. One is on the ideal side of her throat where the very first tumor was located. The other one is on the left side of her face, ideal below her left ear.

Our vet Dr. Schaller very first looked at the one found on her deal with as well as was positive when specifying that she might take it off at her practice, however the expression on her deal with instantly altered when she felt the lump on Missy’s throat.

It appears to be a grade II mast cell tumor. Those grow below the skin in the subcutaneous tissues.

Referral to oncologist

Our vet explained she would have to refer us back to the Veterinary Specialty healthcare facility (VSH) in Cary, N.C., where Missy had been treated in late 2014/early 2015. She provided Missy a heartfelt kiss on her adorable bit head. Gulp.

After Dr. Schaller made the referral to the VSH, I called to make an visit with one of their oncologists. Missy will be taken a look at Monday afternoon (the day this blog publish goes live) as well as provided a prognosis.

We’ll take it from there, as well as I’ll keep you people updated on our new cancer journey. Paws crossed for somewhat great news.

Cancer as well as raw pet dog food – cancer busted my bubble

Now what does all of this have to make with raw feeding? Well, Missy’s very first cancer diagnosis got me started on our raw feeding journey.

Until then, her as well as her sibling Buzz had been on a kibble/wet food diet, essentially for the very first 3 years of their lives.

So while Missy was doing a fantastic task kicking cancer’s butt with the assist of the oncologist personnel at the VSH, I attempted to comprehend exactly how a 3 year old pet dog might potentially come down with cancer.

Missy after her tumor removal surgery

On WeAreTheCure.org, I discovered that Boxers are genetically predisposed to having the greatest incidence of mast cell tumors, which did, indeed, end up being Missy’s Boxer mom’s death sentence at age 3.

I likewise heard holistic veterinarians such as Dr. Karen Becker, Dr. Dee Blanco, as well as the lots of contributors of Dogs naturally magazine state as well as compose that extremely processed pet dog food may be contributing to the canine cancer epidemic.

The benefits of a raw pet dog food diet

Coincidentally, I kept hearing them talk about an alternate that sounded appealing to me – a fresh, raw food diet plan with the complying with benefits:

severely minimized allergy symptoms
shiny, full coats
hvite tenner
smaller poop
less doggie smell
strengthened immune system
and, what stuck with me the most, a minimized cancer risk.

So while I undoubtedly couldn’t do anything about my bit puppy woman being part Boxer, I figured I might at least provide this raw food thing a try in buy to keep the cancer at bay for as long as possible. ideally many, lots of years.

Over the program of the past 3 years, I was able to notice lots of of above provided benefits in both pups.

Their coats are gorgeous as well as shiny, their teeth are clean without me having to clean them as well as Buzz no longer has ear infections. Their poop volume has decreased, as well as they genuinely don’t have that normal pet dog smell.

I admit that when the very first two yearly total blood counts showed that Missy (& Buzz) were in fantastic health, I didn’t believe that we’d ever be taking care of cancer again.

Well, the nasty C just verified me wrong. While Missy stayed complimentary of mast cell tumors for 3 years, the darn cancer has caught back up with us as well as busted my bubble, in spite of feeding a species-appropriate, raw meat diet.

Missy during a chemotherapy session

Am I going to continue to feed my dogs raw?

You may be wondering whether I’m going to continue to feed raw? Det kan du vedde på.

And every pet dog who’ll comply with in Missy’s (& her sibling Buzz’s) paw prints will be fed a fresh, nourishing raw meat diet. That’s a pledge you can hold me to.

“Labrador retrievers like to chew on things. So, Santa puts extra-large antler chews in their stockings each as well as every year. These make our whole family happy – they get something they like as well as I get to keep my shoes intact for one more few months.”

Senior Airman Robyne Keller as well as her dog Chance:

“If possibility might have anything in his stocking, it would be his granny as well as Grandpa. They miss him extremely much.”

Beaux Cooper as well as her dogs Izzie & Murphy:

“As anyone knows, no two dogs are alike in character so our babes’ stockings will differ just as they do. For Izzie: ropes, ropes, as well as more ropes! She likes them as well as always lights up when she pulls one out of her stocking. Murphy will be getting new booties for his sensitive feet as well as most likely a bandanna to draw out his soulful eyes!”

Vivi Kalvig as well as her dog Atom:

In Atom’s own words ?

“A bag of old, dug up bones with some meaty gravy as well as a few of that pasta salad that you never provide me! Also, a big teddy bear I can rip apart without being told off, a pair of fluffy slippers just for ME, a big, bouncy, gumball as well as a soft bed with a fluffy throw. Woof!”

Adelaida Diaz-Roa as well as her dog Mico:

“I go biking with my pup all of the time so I’m believing of getting him some goggles as well as a custom bit helmet.”

Jo Jo Harder as well as Romeo:

“My top dog Romeo would like to discover a ‘chicken’ in his Christmas stocking. I have never seen a dog get so excited just upon hearing this word!”

Nancy Lauseng as well as her dogs Benson & Duke:

“I’d like for our black lab Benson to discover some tennis spheres in his Christmas stocking. That’s all he truly wants so he can play fetch all the time long. If Benson’s happy, everyone’s happy!

“I’d like for our hound dog fight it out to discover some rawhides in his stocking so he doesn’t eat Benson’s tennis balls. He would likewise like to discover a squirRel i strømpen sin siden hans entusiasme jager ekorn.

My dog barks during agility

My mutt Ace has ended up being much more vocal as well as excited during agility method within the last six months. He barks wildly nonstop, as you can see in the video below. watch it on mute if you don’t want to be totally annoyed.

I haven’t addressed Ace’s “talking back” problem up until now since I don’t understand exactly how to handle the problem. In the meantime, his “attitude” has gotten worse.

What concerns me the most is not his barking, however exactly how his enjoyment escalates to aggressive habits such as nipping my hands. He has left bruises a number of times. It’s difficult to see it in the video, however he bites at my sleeves during the weave poles.

My mutt is out of control.

Agility fitness instructors I’ve dealt with tell me that Ace wishes to run as quick as he can. since the challenges sluggish him down, he gets frustrated when he has to maneuver them. The space we method agility in is likewise as well small, leaving him bit space to get as much as speed. His barking is his method of telling me “Let’s go!”

One fitness instructor (Hi Sandy!) has told me all along that I’ve been triggering these issues by actually taking as well huge of steps with my feet. like Ace, I want to go fast. After all, we are both runners.

But my big steps cause me to stop suddenly as we reach each obstacle, triggering Ace to do a jump or pop upwards. This popping movement that Ace did led to barking, which led to nipping. I don’t notice that I’m doing any type of quick stops in the video, however I’m sure I still do it on specific program layouts. Either way, Ace has developed the habit to jump at my hands as well as bark.

Ace’s crazy, constant barking began a number of months back on the teeter. This is an challenge he is still anxious on. What a huge baby! He would bark on the teeter since he didn’t want to walk across it. He utilized to try to avoid the teeter completely as well as then grunt as well as bark when I required him across it.

The barking on the teeter led to barking at the weave poles. He wished to run right by them instead of really weaving. When I slowed him down to do them correctly, he began grunting as well as soon after that he was full out barking. now he barks nonstop throughout the whole course, even when he is in a down-stay setting on the table.

He utilized to be much better at agility, as well as now he has gotten worse as well as tries to avoid obstacles. Is my dog tired or what?

The method Ace is acting in this video is quite typical, although his enjoyment commonly escalates to more than this. That’s when he fixates on my hands as well as mouths them like they are a toy.

Unwanted habits is never the dog’s fault.

I joined an agility class for something my dog as well as I might do together – a method to boost our bond while exercising as well as difficult ourselves. one of the reasons I haven’t addressed Ace’s barking is since agility is supposed to fun. We aren’t serious competitors, so I’ve never worried about his habits as well much. Also, in a class setting, it’s difficult to sluggish down as well as take private time to work when others are waiting on a turn.

But now I’ve reached that point where sufficient is enough. It’s difficult to have fun with a barking dog, particularly one beginning to show dominance as well as aggression. It’s difficult not to take it personally when Ace hurts my hands. It’s difficult not to lose my solidify when he can’t manage himself sufficient to hear fundamental commands, let alone respond to them.

Of course, I don’t blame Ace for his behavior. It’s totally my fault for not addressing these problems before they ended up being habits. Ace can’t rationalize what he’s doing. He’s just being a dog, as well as he’s trying to be a great dog. All he wishes to do is comply with me around as well as make me happy.

I had my boyfriend Josh run Ace on the program last week to see if our dog would respond in a different way to him. Han gjorde ikke. Ace was most likely even more excited since Josh was available with him for the very first time. Ace even tried to go for Josh’s hands.

I’ve had more experienced fitness instructors do run-throughs with Ace on the course, as well as he is much much better with them. He does not bark or ended up being fixated on their hands. He is able to focus much better since he is less excited. One member of our class suggested Ace gets more excited around me since I’m his person, as well as he likes me so much. however I believe he does much better with the other fitness instructors since they are more assertive, as well as he sees them as authority figures.

My dog is not a vocal dog outside of agility. We method obedience in the exact same building, on the exact same floor, as well as he isEn helt annen hund da – stille, avslappet, responsiv!

6. Kjæledyrhunden vil ha problemer av noe slag.

My Foster Pet Dog Vixen ble pottetrenet. Vixen forsto kommandoer.

Enhver Foster Pet Dog vil kreve lang tid for å bytte hjem.

La meg forstå i kommentarene!

Do I have to Be There When My canine is put Down?

short answer, no. long answer, checked out on.

Josh as well as I lost two animals on the exact same day. He as well as I were both there when our feline Beamer as well as our canine Ace died, although not rather exactly how we expected it.

I always believed I’d ultimately have to make the dreaded decision of when to put Ace down. “Is it truly time? Am I doing the best thing? Is he in pain?”

I likewise presumed I’d get to have one last “special day” with Ace before he died. I did this with my senior foster canine named Dora. I figured Ace as well as I would go to his preferred park, play with his ball, take pictures, eat a steak!

I didn’t get to do any type of of those things. Which is why all of us requirement to have numerous “special days” with our animals as well as liked ones. Every trip to the park is special. Every kiss. Every snuggle.

Ace died in our living space unexpectedly. Although, not all that suddenly since he was a 12-year-old lab mix. One minute I was joking around, petting him, slapping his side like I do when I say, “You’re a great boy, Ace!” Twenty minutes later he was gone. We believe he had a heart attack.

My buddy Maren told me that this is what Ace wanted, that he would not have desired a drawn out “special day.” I realized she is right.

Ace was a low-maintenance, “I’m right here however no requirement to tension over me” type of guy. He only wished to make me happy. He liked to just BE, as well as he delighted in every moment. daily was special for Ace.

My mother stated Ace provided me one last gift. He spared me that agonizing pain almost all pet owners face. “Is it time? Am I doing the best thing?”

We’d just gone with euthanasia with our feline Beamer that extremely day, as well as Ace spared us from going with the exact same pain around again.

I’d really always really hoped Ace would someday die peacefully at home. however I never believed it would really happen.

It was an terrible thing to see my finest buddy struggle as well as die, yet at the exact same time he was relatively peaceful, not all that different from when our feline exaled his last breath under euthanasia 90 minutes earlier.

The two deaths weren’t that different, as well as I was pleased to be there for both.

For me, it was a comfort to see they did not experience at the extremely end.

Do I have to be there when my canine is put down?

No. You don’t have to be there.

When we chose to have Beamer euthanized, the vet provided us a long time alone with our cat. then he came back as well as told us extremely clearly, you’re extremely welcome to stay however I would select not to stay if this were my cat. If you were my children, I would motivate you not to stay. (His “children” are 40 years old.)

I appreciated this, since I understand numerous pet owners feel remarkable pressure that they “must” stay or that there is no choice.

A buddy told me her vet pressured her to stay when she favored not to. one more buddy composed about exactly how she just might not be there since it would make her so anxious she would faint. Some people can’t be there or just don’t want to be there, as well as that’s OK.

Our vet suggested that perhaps our feline would not want us there. He said, for example, if I were going into surgical treatment I would not want my whole household standing there to view me “go under.” That would be awkward. Not the exact same as dying, however I comprehended what he meant.

I believe it depends upon the pet as well as the circumstances.

One thing I discovered is that both Beamer as well as Ace started to pull away from us when they were dying.

Beamer on his last afternoon

Beamer had been ill all week as well as as he got worse, the much more he tried to relocation away. on that last day, he kept trying to discover a cool, peaceful area on the floor. We’d draw him in for cuddles however he wished to be alone. He was typically the type of feline that liked to be held!

Our other feline Scout, who would typically be at Beamer’s side, was likewise providing his finest friend some space. He’d been providing Beamer area for about a month, only I hadn’t rather realized it yet.

When Ace was dying, he got up as well as walked to the far corner of the room, as far from us as he might in a little space. He did not come as much as me to tell me something was wrong, he moved away from me.

This is, I suppose, what animals do.

Our vet, I think, was trying to spare us the memory of viewing our feline die. Jeg ersure some people react in hysterics to see such a thing. I can only picture what vets experience day after day handling all kind of human emotions.

So our vet stepped out of the space to provide us a minute to make our own decision. I already understood I wished to be there, however I thanked him for reinforcing the choice. since it’s 100% okay not to be there, as well as people requirement to understand that.

Our animals understand they are loved. That is what’s many important.

The end will never go rather as we wish. death does not work that way. the very best thing any type of of us can do for our animals is provide them the very best life we can for as long as we can. That doesn’t imply it will be perfect. It implies we try our best.

While I did not get to have that last “special day” with Ace, I did get to have that with Beamer. While I spent the day holding my dying cat, I did not understand it was likewise Ace’s last. I like to believe this is yet one more gift from Ace. He provided Beamer those last, special hours.

I’m comforted by the many, numerous trips Ace as well as I took to our preferred park in the last 2 years. hours as well as hours as well as hours of my time. since I understood it was restricted as well as every moment was special.

I’m permanently thankful for Ace. My good, ideal boy.

…………………………………

Unfortunately, I am practically always conscious of others who are likewise grieving a pet. This spring, numerous of my buddies in the pet blogging area likewise lost a dog. I am unfortunate for their losses, yet it provides me comfort to understand I am not alone in my grief. While all of us experience sorrow in our own ways, it is universal.

Les mye mer om orgelsjøtt for hunder her.

What dehydrator to purchase for making canine treats?

There are higher-end dehydrators that include temperature guidelines for different foods as well as adjustable thermostats.

I saw one on Amazon that’s only $80 (comes with adjustable thermostat as well as 5 trays, however has the choice of adding a overall of 12 trays):

Bla gjennom mye mer matdehydratorer på Amazon her.

I no longer have to attract them to try freshMat, men la meg garantere deg at de absolutt liker sin en-ingrediens, dehydrerte godbiter!

La meg forstå i kommentarene!
