More about Farfetched Apparel

Farfetched apparel is located in Scottsdale, Arizona. The company was launched in 2015 by animal lovers and “adopted dog parents.”

From its web site:

[quote_right]”Our designs are aimed at giving passionate dog lovers of the world a voice they can wear and display proudly.”[/quote_right]”We believe in aesthetics that are a bit out of the common and comical – qualities we see in our rescue dogs and ourselves. Our designs are aimed at giving passionate dog lovers of the world a voice they can wear and display proudly. Caring never Looked So Good.”

The company sent me one of its t-shirts (Ace and I are modeling it in this post), a mug and a tote bag.

The products are all high-quality. I love my “Coffee & Dogs” mug and here in Solana beach (where plastic bags are practically illegal), tote bags always come in handy!

The t-shirt is soft and comfy, made with 100 percent combed cotton. I would definitely order another. I’d just go with a size larger (large). I know I’m not very big, but the medium was pretty snug on me as you can see. just depends on your style, and the company is available to help with any sizing questions through its live chat box in the bottom right of its web site.

Farfetched Apparel’s #DOGood Collection

While 10 percent of all of Farfetched’s proceeds go to help animal charities, sometimes dog lovers would like to make a larger impact.

100 percent of the proceeds from all of Farfetched Apparel’s #DOGood Collection go directly to animal charities.

Each month, the company chooses a different charity partner. The March partner is Arizona Humane Society.

The limited edition #DOGood collection currently includes the official #DOGood unisex t-shirt for $36.99. It comes in several different colors including gray, black, pink and white. I really love this aqua color.

Interview: Marc Goldberg, author of ‘Let Dogs Be Dogs’

Note: “5 question Friday” is a new feature on that Mutt where I interview authors, trainers, veterinarians, bloggers and others who work with dogs. It’s a way to share different opinions and experiences. If you would like to be featured, please email Lindsay@ThatMutt.com.

Dog trainer Marc Goldberg is the author of the new book “Let Dogs Be Dogs: Canine Nature and Mastering the Art of Living with Your Dog.”

He co-authored the book with brother Christopher from the “Monks of new Skete.”

The “Monks of new Skete” have supported themselves for four decades by breeding and training dogs from their monastery in Cambridge, N.Y. The monks sold over 1.5 million copies of their past books including “The Art of raising A Puppy.”

Marc owns a canine training company in Chicago and is the former president of the international association of Canine Professionals, a group dedicated to the education and support of canine training professionals worldwide.

“Let Dogs Be Dogs” is available on Amazon in hardcover and for the Kindle. purchase here.

Here were my five questions for Marc:

Marc Goldberg and brother Christopher

That Mutt: What can people expect to learn from your new book?

Marc Goldberg: pack Leader is a term coined decades ago by the Monks of new Skete.

In the last few years it has become a popular way to describe how people ought to relate to their dogs. The big problem is that nobody has adequately defined how to be a good pack leader in a compassionate, sensible way.

In “Let Dogs Be Dogs,” we lay out a roadmap … a very extensive and comprehensive pathway to a pleased relationship with your dog.

You’ll learn what your canine really wants from you, why, and exactly how to offer it. In short, you’ll learn how to have the relationship of your dreams.

TM: What is something you believe in that other people think is crazy?

Marc: I believe dogs have souls. and I believe we will be reunited with our beloved companions on the other side.

In a real sense we are their guardians on earth. We are responsible for creating their physical and emotional well-being through good and kind leadership and suitable forms of love with the best balance of exercise and affection and authority.

But, once gone, I believe they wait for us to guide us and make us feel safe on the other side of life. So basically, I believe that one day I will go to the company of my loved ones and dogs.

TM: What does “Pack Leader” imply to you in canine training?

Marc: A good pack leader is very much like the most inspiring teacher you will remember from school.

The “inspiring teacher” was never the impatient or unpredictable one. In fact she or he set high standards for you yet believed in your potential to accomplish terrific things. She may not have gushed constant praise, but when you got a word of encouragement you took it to heart because it was deeply meaningful.

Similarly, a good pack leader meets all her dog’s physical and psychological needs while inspiring the canine to adhere to the guidelines of safety and good behavior. This actually grants the canine a terrific deal of physical liberty and freedom from emotional conflict.

A terrific pack Leader knows everything a canine wants and needs, and then trades those resources to the canine in return for the basic elements we humans need.

TM: Do your dogs sleep in your bed?

Marc: At night my dogs own the couch and I sleep with a cat who hogs the covers a lot less than my dogs.

TM: Is there anything you’d like to say to That Mutt’s readers?

Marc: Don’t believe the malarkey that being a pack Leader to your canine has anything to finish with trying to dominate or scare him. It has everything to finish with granting him the grace of liberty, safety in this confusing human world into which we have brought him and it also allows for the greatest level of relationship.

A canine who actually wants to please you – – and knows how to do it – – is a canine you can take all over with you. and after all, isn’t that what dogs really want?

Thank you, Marc!

5 questions with author Laura Koerber

Is pack Leader a naughty word in canine training?

Common canine training guidance I’m happy I ignored

Putting in the work: anyHjørnetann kan være en god hund

” McConnell skrev.

San Diego Humane Society North Campus

Darwin’s Raw canine Food cancer support formula

In my last blog publish right here on that Mutt, I composed about Dr. Demian Dressler’s cancer diet plan for dogs that I started getting ready for my cancer pup Missy. It’s essentially a carefully cooked diet plan that consists of:

lean meat or fish
boiled & puréed eco-friendly leafy veggies
shiitake mushrooms
cottage cheese
brun ris

Our new homeopathic veterinarian Dr. loops authorized of many components however did not suggest feeding brown rice (or any type of rice) to canine cancer clients or any type of dogs. That’s since it’s a carbohydrate which breaks down into sugar as well as feeds the cancer cells.

According to Dr. Dressler, the polysaccharides contained in the brown rice assist fight cancer, however Dr. loops does not share that opinion.

Since Dr. loops has had 22+ years of experience in the homeopathic field, I count on his judgment. I scratched brown rice off of Missy’s meal plan again.

While I was at Dr. Loops’ method in Pittosboro, N.C., to pick up Missy’s homeopathic remedies, he reached into a freezer as well as pulled out a particular raw canine food brand to show me.

I instantly understood it was a brand called Darwin’s natural Pet Products.

That’s since I utilized to feed a range of their raw food formulas at the beginning of my raw feeding journey 3 years ago.

I acknowledged their distinct packaging – four 8 oz bundles of raw canine food that can quickly be detached along a perforated line.

Darwin’s raw canine food: Intelligent style cancer support Formula

The cancer support formula is one of 4 prescription foods offered at Darwin’s. The other 3 lines of their Intelligent style Veterinary meals are a kidney support formula, a liver support formula, as well as a joint & musculoskeletal support formula.

Since this is a prescription-only food, it wasn’t something I had fed my dogs before. The cancer support formula is high in protein, healthy fats, broccoli, medicinal mushrooms as well as berries.

It is low in carbs. (Note that Darwin’s likewise offers general raw canine food formulas that do not need a prescription.)

Ingredients in Darwin’s Intelligent style cancer support Formula:

Whitefish
Duck necks
Duck wings
Beef liver
Tripe
Brokkoli
Duck hearts
Mushrooms (Maitake & Shiitake)
Whole dried eggs
Blackberries, Blueberries, Raspberries
Tomato powder
Eggehviter
tran
Spirulina
Fiskeolje
Sunflower seed oil
Turmeric
Oyster shell powder
Grønn te
Vitamin E
Zinc proteinate
Thiamine mononitrate
Svart pepper
L-arginine
Manganese proteinate
Jod

After Dr. Loops’ office faxed the prescription over to Darwin’s, I called them to reactivate my account as well as location my new order.

It’s $5.90/lb as well as I’m taking a look at a monthly purchase of 42 lb for Missy. I did not location a new purchase for my other canine Buzz since I can only pay for this type of food for one dog. best now that occurs to be Missy.

The primary reason I had stopped feeding Darwin’s on a routine basis was their price. It was just out of my budget plan to feed two big dogs industrial raw canine food, which is exactly why I started putting my own raw meals together.

See That Mutt’s post: diy raw canine food recipes.

How to feed Darwin’s cancer support formula

All of Darwin’s food is ideally fed raw. However, it can be lightly cooked for picky eaters or those not doing well on 100% raw since of a compromised immune system.

Since Missy seems to be doing much better with lightly cooked food, that’s precisely what I’ve been doing.

Missy eats twice per day, as well as I’ve had to boost her food allowance from 8-9 oz per meal to 12 oz as she lost some weight over the program of the last few months.

She’s because then put on 1 lb 2 oz, which made me extremely happy. She now evaluates 49.2 lb, only a few ounces away from her target weight of 50 lb.

See our post: exactly how much raw food to feed my dog?

When preparing her meals, I put the contents of a number of raw food bundles into a pan as well as cook them for about 5 minutes on a low temperature setting.

Since this specific food includes eco-friendly tripe, there is a great amount of odor that tries to linger in the kitchen area (yuck).

I’ve started to reduce the “aroma” by cooking larger batches at once. That way, I have a number of days’ worth of food as well as don’t have to stink up the home on a everyday basis. Pus, it saves me time.

I discovered that covering the concoction with a lid works quite well in purchase to include the smell. illumination some candles integrated with opening the patio door for fresh air helps, too. #AnythingForTheDogs

Bathing the food bundle in hot water is one more alternative, so is adding warm water to the raw food in the bowl. however those methods haven’t been working also for Missy as lightly cooking it.

How Darwin’s raw canine food is delivered

Darwin’s ships their food through UPS in thermo containers covered with dry ice.

No, they right away forgive or just step on. Some would say they are just not capable of deeper thoughts or worries, they’re just being dogs. but I don’t think that even matters. They still do what they do and observing them “do what dogs do” just makes me feel better.

I love how just seeing Elsie’s and Sophie’s “smiling” faces, thumping tails, wiggling bodies, eagerness to begin the day and boundless fresh energy make me stop and marvel, if only for a moment. After my recent breast cancer diagnosis, I genuinely appreciate their exceptional ability to live for the moment. I intend to try to learn how to do the same.

Thanks, girls, for your optimism, whether I am imagining it or not.

What basic life lessons has your pet dog taught you?

Training an anxious dog too quickly

My foster dog Cosmo is teaching me to rely mostly on positive reinforcement training, to be patient and relaxed and to be creative in finding ways to boost his confidence.

He reminds me to simplify everything I ask of him.

Instead of expecting Cosmo to remain in a 20-minute stay, yield to me in doorways and never pull on the leash, I need to focus on one of these concepts at a time and break them down into smaller steps. That way Cosmo can be successful and encouraged to learn more.

Cosmo is a very sweet, friendly guy. He wants to make me happy. He wants to make everyone happy. He just needs to work at his own pace. Jeg kan relatere!

Sometimes my expectations are way too high for him. That’s important to point out, because it’s a mistake most dog owners make. Dogs are capable of learning quite a bit, but they need clear, simple directions with sometimes 100s of repetitions.

For dogs that haven’t experienced much in their lives, even the tiniest challenges can be extremely difficult.

Cosmo is a good example of a dog who has very little tolerance for stress. He gets frustrated very easily, especially when asked to do something new. I can also tell he experiences some amount of fear in new situations or if I express any frustration myself.

I don’t know why Cosmo has a low stress tolerance. It could be his personality. It could be genetics. but it’s also painfully obvious that he’s had very little training and socialization. I don’t think he’s been expected to do much for the last nine years or so.

Here’s an example:

Cosmo knows how to step over his leash if it gets caught under his armpit. but if it gets tangled further, he goes into a panic – rolling and biting and making the situation worse. A dog with a higher tolerance for stress would remain collected and either figure out how to get the leash untangled or wait for help. Ingen stor sak.

If I ask Cosmo to do something new, it’s typical for him to shut down. He avoids eye contact. His ears go back. He turns away. He shakes. He tries to retreat to his kennel or a corner of the house away from me. He licks his lips. If I push him too far or try to use force, he will snap.

Cosmo is very good at clearly expressing his stress levels. It’s my job to pay attention and to slowly build his confidence without pushing him too far.

Just the other day, I asked Cosmo to lie down on a towel for a treat. You would think I had asked him to jump off a cliff! He became terrified, showed signs of shutting down and was not going to put one toe on that towel!

Rather than give up, I decided to use this opportunity to build Cosmo’s confidence.

So I got out the treats and rewarded him for sitting next to the towel.

Wow! What a good boy!

Then, he got a treat for putting one paw on the towel. Next, I rewarded him for standing on the towel. Then, for lying down on the towel.

Puh!

The whole process took at least 10 minutes.

Cosmo was mentally exhausted after that and needed a long nap to recover. I probably pushed him too far, actually.

I realize most dogs are not going to experience stress over something such as a towel or a piece of trash blowing in the wind. but it’s still important to break concepts into small steps for all dogs.

Now that I’ve lived with Cosmo for a few months, I can see why people with reactive/aggressive or fearful dogs find it easier to just keep the dogs away from other dogs or away from new people.

I also realize some dogs are so dangerous they truly can’t leave their homes. I probably would not be able to work with a dog like that. I need to be able to get out of the house and take my dog for walks and to take him anywhere dogs are allowed.

Although Cosmo is 9 years old, I know he will be able to slowly stretch his limits and feel more comfortable in new situations. He loves to go to adoption events and training classes, and he loves to go on walks, so that’s great!

Break dog training into small steps

Cosmo and I got to help out with a beginner’s obedience class. Cosmo was the demo dog, showing off his mad “skills” such as sitting and staying. He’s very good at this because he is treat motivated. It’s easy to guide him, and he loves the class environment.

Most of the dog handlers in these classes know how to teach sit and stay (some don’t), but everyone is there as a reminder to work in small steps with our dogs.

Even the concept of “stay” is complex, but beginning dog trainers move way too quickly all the time.

I teach “stay” by giving the dog lots of treats for not moving even when I’m standing right next to him.

Once he has that down, I pivot so I’m facing the dog but still right next to him. The treats keep coming as long as the dog stays.

I use a verbal release word – ok– to signal to the dog he can move again. but the real rewards come only when the dog is actually staying, not after he is released.

A dog cannot possibly grasp the concept of “stay” right off the bat, even if I take just one step away. but dog owners try to take several steps away all the time, before the dog understands the “stay” concept. This is frustrating to both the human and the dog and often results in the human giving up for good.

My dog Ace will pretty much stay no matter what. I don’t know how people live with dogs who won’t stay for more than 30 seconds. It would drive me crazy.

Ace didn’t even know what “sit” meant when I got him. I remember the difficulties I had communicating with him on that first day. I had to hold onto his collar if I didn’t want him to move. This was quite the challenge with a 65-pound, excitable dog. and paws are always muddy during Minnesota springs.

After I adopted Ace, we would go on an hour-long walk every single morning. We’d stop in the church parking lot by my old apartment and practice sit-stay over and over again. Hver. Enkelt. Dag.

First he learned to stay while I turned and faced him toe-to-toe.

Next I’d tell him to stay while I took a step away or a step in any direction. once he understood that, I’d go halfway to the end of the leash. maybe the next day I’d try walking in a circle around my dog (always a tough one!), and so on.

If we practiced in a new area, I’d start all over from square one or from wherever my dog could be successful.

When I taught him “down” and “stay,” we started over again.

We went through lots of jerky treats and 100s of little training sessions.

Cosmo will be able to sit and stay just as reliably as Ace. it all depends on how much time I put into his training. and because of his low tolerance for stress, I have to make sure to work very slowly and set him up for lots of success.

Cosmo wants to run and hide if he knows he’s done something “wrong.” This is teaching me to truly ignore his mistakes and praise him when he does something right. It’s harder than it sounds! like Cosmo, I can get easily frustrated, so he and I are working together on our stress tolerances!

Set specific criteria for each training session

It helps me to ask myself what I want to work on during each particular training session with my dog. Otherwise, I get overwhelmed because I will be thinking too broadly.

Not specific: I am going to teach my dog to heel.

Specific: I am going to stop moving forward every time my dog pulls. “Pulling” means the leash is tight or the dog’s shoulder is in front of my hip. The dog will get a treat every time he looks at me. If my dog pulls, I will not get frustrated. Instead, I will switch directions often, walk in a zig-zag and walk at different speeds so my dog never knows what I’ll be up to. I will keep the walk fun and interesting and reward my dog with food when he’s doing what I want.

Not specific: I am going to teach my dog to come when I call him.

Specific: I am going to grab some chicken and run away from my dog in the backyard yelling “Cosmo, come!” in a firm but friendly voice. My dog will get the chicken when he sits directly in front of me. I will use the chicken to guide him. He will have a long lead on so I can catch him and re-direct his attention if needed. I will remain happy and fun even if my dog is having a hard time focusing.

First-time dog owners or dog owners who’ve just gotten a new dog (like me and my foster dog) don’t always have a clear understanding of what it means to really break dog training down into small steps. It isn’t natural to us. We tend to look at the big picture and expect results right away.

But you typically can’t teach a dog to roll over right away, for example. You have to first teach the dog to lie on his side and then to start shifting in one direction and then to roll completely over.

You can’t teach a dog to stay on his dog bed while you eat dinner unless you’ve already taught him the concept of stay. then you have to practice moving away from the dog and slowly increasing the time he stays. then you can add mild distractions like a steak dinner ?

What are your suggestions for training an anxious or fearful dog?

As for Cosmo and I, by no means do I have him figured out. He has a lot more to teach me – mostly about patience and remaining positive.

For those of you who have worked with dogs with any kind of fear or anxiety issues, I would love to hear your suggestions for how I can build Cosmo’s confidence. I have him signed up for another obedience class since it’s something we both enjoy.

Cosmo is up for adoption with 4 Luv of dog Rescue in Fargo. read more about him in my post American Eskimo dog for adoption in Fargo. If you would like more info om cosmo, send en e -post til lindsay@thatmutt.com.
